Why the Superbird and Daytona have enormous wings

Have you ever wanted to know why the Dodge Charger Daytona and the Plymouth Roadrunner Superbird have these enormous spoilers?
What is your idea? To look cool? Naah.
More downforce? Maybe but it wouldn’t have to be THAT big.
To get more places to put stickers on? Nope, these cars are huge, they already have enough places.

Big wang gang

Okay, one hint - it has nothing to do with NASCAR and actually it is just there to make the car more practical.

I know. There are more pictures than text...

Okay, I will tell you.

Prepared for the greatest (and most useless) piece of information you’ll ever read?

Can you see it? Yes! The Charger Daytona and the Roadrunner Superbird have these giant wings just to make the boot lid fit under them.

Am I the only one who thinks they could’ve just mounted it on the boot lid? I mean, it is one of the most famous designs in the entire world but it wasn’t really necessary, right?

I have your answer sir- This wing is actually more functional, due to the pillars being on the side rather than the boot lid. Notice how they are both angled outward. Air passing by the side of the car pushes against the pillars, thus generating lateral force, making the car more stable at high speeds. The more you know!

Thanks! But why do people hate on this post so much on Facebook? They say “it is there to create downforce, you i*t”, of course it is! I thought I wouldn’t even have to write it there. I mean - they wouldn’t put it there for no reason, just to make the car look cool. I just didn’t know I would have to justify the obvious downforce part of the thing, that’s it…. But either way, thanks for your comment.
