What's an underrated engine that deserves some time in the limelight? I'd like to put forward the Toyota 3S-GE 'Beams' engine. Probably overshadowed by the 2JZ, but it's super revvy, tuneable, and produced with Yamaha.

It’s a whole new beast when you stick it into an econo car.

Daihatsu’s JB-DET and JC-DET.

Let’s start with the JB-DET, the engine you can find in early 2000s Daihatsus, like the Copen. It’s a 63hp 659cc I4 kei car engine. Sure, 63hp doesn’t sound much for a turbocharged 0.66 liter, the Beat achieved that number without a turbo, but there’s more to that engine. The JB-DET has a very high redline of 8500 ( 9000 if you install D-Sport ECU without any mods ), and it has the most torque in its class, even until today. Yes, and that means more torque than today’s Daihatsu Kei cars. And the potential in this car is amazing.
And this is where the JC-DET strikes. The engine is only a stroked JB-DET, with 54cc extra displacement, but due to no restriction, it’s a hell lot better. The engine still revs as high as the Copen, but it now makes 120hp. Sure, it doesn’t sound much, but remember that the JC-DET is a 713cc engine, it makes a better specific power output than a lancer evo 10. Some say you could have a 200hp version from the JC-DET, if you ordered specially from Daihatsu.
Both of these can share some parts, because they’re basically the same engine with different crankshafts and rods. And that means the Copen’s aftermarket 65.5mm piston can fit to a JC-DET engine. TAKEOFF did that once, and at the end of the day they made a 220hp 822cc Daihatsu Copen.

The Duratec, from Ford/Mazda. Used in so many things, at so many tunes.

I’d say the 2.7 twinturbo v6 found in the RS4 B5
Highly tunable, great sounding.
