What's an underrated engine that deserves some time in the limelight? I'd like to put forward the Toyota 3S-GE 'Beams' engine. Probably overshadowed by the 2JZ, but it's super revvy, tuneable, and produced with Yamaha.
I am going with the VQ35 series of motors. Was used in the 350Z/G35/Skyline 350GT and also in plethora of Nissan commuter cars to this day. Won many awards and has proven its reliability. To me, arguably one of the best sounding engines with a good exhaust (Search 350Z Tomei Single) and has a great powerband.
Toyota 1.8L 2zz-fe. Basically toyota’s version of the b18. Made 180hp stock and could rev to the moon.

2.2 hdi diesel from PDA it doesn’t have a ton of power but a lot of torque
Volkswagen TSI engine, specifically the Twincharged units they produced before pulling the plug and making it just a turbocharged engine. This 1.4 litre 4-cylinder engine had a turbocharger and a supercharger in one unit, so it was quite advanced for its age then. It also won the International Engine of the Year award in 2006, and my family happened to own a MK5 Golf GT where this engine was introduced into the VW lineup. Coupled with the DSG gearbox it was quite torquey and got you going quite fast yet it wouldn’t break the pump.
… Except they are very complex, and like to grenade themselves
B234r, easily tunable, holds quite a lot on stock internals and is reliable
Suzuki G13B, little 1.3L but super capable in a lightweight chassis like the Swift GTI. Here’s a little swift making a GTR look slow at a local lapping day (Suzuki definitely had a driver advantage over GTR)

The 302 cubic inch “Jimmy Six”. It’s an inline 6 produced by GMC that’s different than the Chevy inline 6 of the day (1950s-ish if I’m not mistaken)
What cars was that engine in
Toyota Altezza (RS200), the JDM equivalent of the Lexus IS 1
