Dodge Viper Gas Mileage Challenge! City Driving vs. Highway Hypermiling!
I wanted to see what kind of gas mileage my Dodge Viper gets — so I drove it around the city and hypermiled it on the highway to find out. Check out my column for the numbers, or watch the video above.

Letting it in neutral while coasting? Aren’t you wasting fuel? I mean letting your car idle by itself uses fuel, while coasting in gear (at least with a manual) doesn’t sip any fuel,,,
Was looking for this! The sixt gear of the T56 tranny (which is afaik also used for the viper) is a overdrive gear for just to coast.
OMG who the f*k would buy a viper and give a sht about gas mileage? Not going to watch this video it’s beyond pointless
You have no sense of humor sir
That tropico music!
im not longer worried about that 20 liters the trans am does.
I want to see this kind of test in Europe, driving here is so much smoother as you don’t have to Stop on almost every cross road.
Don’t come to Sofia then :D
Honestly, I think you might have gotten better mileage by going faster. Between the cam profile, trans gearing, and diff gearing, you hay have been able to go faster and get better mpg. My old 96 Grand Cherokee with a 5.2L V8 got its best mpg around 70mph. My mom’s 2002 Lancer ES, 4spd auto liked about 80mph. If you ever decide to do it again, try going 65, you may get better fuel economy.
Maybe so. I tried to keep it where the RPMs looked lowest. I’m not sure a few extra MPH in one direction or another would’ve made a huge difference, though.
It’s an old V10. Of course course it’ll burn more fuel than a BP platform in the gulf of Mexico and the Exxon Valdez combined.
Wow lol I expected higher for that highway driving!!
Unless the viper comes with 4.10 or highter final drive I can’t understand why he didn’t do at least 60 and hold it. He got stuck using a bunch of throttle any time it needed to get uphill. I’m sure plenty of people have broken 20+ mpg in a viper
coasting in neutral is worse for mileage than coasting in gear though…
