Online Free Roam Has Finally Been Added To Need For Speed Payback

The much-requested mode was absent at launch but has finally been added as part of a free update

A central feature of many recent Need For Speed games has been the online free roam mode. Driving around an open world with your mates and being able to challenge others was an immersive (and most importantly, fun) experience, but when Payback was released last year, it was absent.

It wasn’t supposed to be, but by the time of launch it was one of a number of things which didn’t make it into the final game, something which upset many long-time fans of the series. Developers Ghost Games have remedied this now, however, and the mode - now called Alldrive: Hangout - has been added as part of an update.

The update brings a few more goodies, too. As well as some new customisation options in the form of new tyre smoke and underglow colours comes something called Catch-Up Packs.

These can be bought from the tuning shop for in-game credits and will help boost your car to either level six, 11, or 16, depending on which pack you buy and presuming you’ve progressed far enough in the game (the first one will unlock at the end of chapter three). They should come in handy if you want to avoid having to grind in order to mod your cars to the max!

The update is out already and also comes with the usual batch of bug fixes and improvements.

Didn’t this come out the other day? Eh, who cares. My opinion doesn’t matter anyway since I don’t have the game.

Online freeroam is cool and all, but imo people should give more attention to the catch-up packs
We all know how unusual the upgrade system in Payback is, but with these you’re not forced to do races over and over again to gain parts, you can get to a certain level straight away

This is what I’m most excited about. It won’t take forever to mod new cars up to see how they perform in their higher performance trims. I bought a drag Audi R8, spent an hour or so modding it up only to realize it can’t launch, at all. So I sold it. This would have saved me the time.

Good point, I really love the catch up packs. They really help with activating the superbuilds for Derelicts!

Exactly. These salty people downvoting are just being fanboys at this point. Online freeroam gets extremely boring after a short while due to the low player limit…
