Ford is not only one of the most popular automakers but is also known to manufacture some of the meanest of transmissions. Transmissions from Ford have created their own legendary and desirable appeal in the market and are very popular among auto-lovers. If you are searching for a transmission for your Ford engine that can effortlessly provide a substantial amount of torque and horsepower, one from the below-mentioned list can be an excellent choice.
1. C4 Transmission
Launched in the year 1964, C4 is a 3-speed automatic transmission which was very commonly used in Ford engines until the year 1981. It was created to replace the Ford-O- Matic 2-speed transmission from Ford which was used in many of the light-duty vehicles. As compared to the Ford-O- Matic, C4 is lighter as it is made from an aluminum alloy while the former was made from cast iron, and is easy to replace.
2. C6 Transmission
While C4 transmission was manufactured by Ford in large numbers, C6 was created for handling grunt of their largest and powerful engines during the 1970s. The modified version of this transmission is still very commonly used in trucks as well as other heavy-duty applications. C6 used the similar ratios of C4 and was launched in the year 1966 for replacing the MX transmission from Ford.
3. AOD Transmission
Introduced in the year 1980, Ford AOD (Automatic Overdrive) was the first 4-speed AOD transmission manufactured by Ford. The design of gearset in this transmission is inspired from Ford’s automatic transmission “X” which was very popular in the 1960s. This AOD transmission replaced a number of transmissions manufactured by Ford, like C5, C4 and light applications of FMX.
4. AODE Transmission
In the year 1992, AOD was designed again with the electronic controls and was named AODE. Initially, this transmission was created for Modular V8 but was also used to replace the AOD transmission with bell-house design in OHV engine powered vehicles. While AOD and AODE do share some basic characteristics, the majority of the internal components cannot be interchanged as AODE makes use of electric solenoids for shifting while AOD uses traditional hydraulics.
5. 4R70W
4R70W transmission is the redesigned version of the AODE transmission which was launched in the year 1993. For enhanced take-off of the acceleration and improved strength of the gearset, 4R70W has the lower first and second gear ratios. However, in the year 1998 due to the concerns regarding the durability of this transmission, mechanical diode took over the one-way clutch for better service and holding capacity.
Many of the transmission companies now offer a performance version of these transmissions to improve their efficiency and durability further. If you have a Ford engine and are looking for a transmission, these performance transmissions can be a great choice.
