why is insurance so expensive in england? dont you pay road tax or something like that?
Nope we pay road tax as well, my tax is £265 a year……
Its based on risk, and they factor that in with age, job, location, how the car is stored overnight, the types of journeys you do (domestic? business miles? commuting?) and the number of years you’ve not had a crash and claimed on your insurance (called No Claims Discount, or NCD).
Young drivers get royally shafted on cars because, well, they’re young and have something to prove, inexperienced, and make up something like 70%+ of accidents on the roads in the first place - so I can understand why insurance companies go nuts. I do agree that some insurance companies take it too far (like charging £3000 for a 1.1L engine hatchback), but I also agree that it acts as a good deterrent to stop inexperienced yahoos from getting into a car with a powerful engine that they would never be able to handle.
However, don’t let the plethora of young drivers on this website screaming about insurance costs make you think its ALL expensive. Once you have 1 or 2 years NCD under your belt insurance costs drop. Over the age of 25 the cost drops like a stone fired out of a cannon toward the ground.
I’m 26 and have a Mustang GT on order with 7 years NCD - I’ve already gotten insurance quotes for it and even with a few modifications declared I’ve gotten it as low as £525 per year (£43.75 a month), which is cheap as hell.
Also, “Road Tax” isn’t actually a tax for using or maintaining the roads. “Road Tax” is just a nickname given to it - its actually called VED (Vehicle Excise Duty) and is a method to encourage people to drive clean vehicles. Electric cars and many Diesels (or tiny Petrol engines) pay £0 VED because they’re zero or very low emission. Meanwhile my Mustang GT’s emissions are through the roof, meaning I’ll pay £505 a year (the most expensive VED band).
In norway you need to pay 10 times more..
Where? in UK? LOL
In all fairness my skoda octavia vrs is classed as a hot hatch and my insurance is only £500 a year and when you think I’m only in my mid 20’s
Insurance drops dramatically in your mid 20s.
I went from a CTR Ep3 to 350z and my insurance was virtually identical. Very different cars but I am happy I made the choice, love my Z :D
P.s. young male in UK
But wait! You’re under 25 so add a 0 to any of these prices!
How often do you pay insurance in England?
Yearly or monthly. 500 would be yearly.
Ahh yes, nearly £450… Young driver problems I guess.
Ouch!! What car have you done that quote on? We do a Young Drivers Scheme and the quotes are no where near that high. That’s got to be a pretty high grouped car on a very young driver. The main reason why Young Drivers Insurance is so expensive:-
‘One in four 18-24 year olds (23%) crash within two years of passing their driving test’ (Brake.org)

But telematics is the answer for young drivers (http://www.skyinsurance.co.uk/telematics-car-insurance.html) - it’s usually expensive the first year, but providing you drive sensibly, you should see a big reduction at renewal.
Not if you’re 18!!
The GT86 costs around 3k for me to insure…
