With what did you paint the gear knob? I was going to say maybe make an outlineof the whole thing and cut the shift pattern out then put the out line over the knob and paint it like that so you dont get any of the pattern paint on the rest of the knob.

With spray paint in a can, I thought about that method too, probably the best one :)

Hmmm I don’t think it will be noticeable enough on the black

I would also recommend a toothpick or a pointy nail. I did the same thing with the timing mark on my block to make it more notable

Might be worth a try with a crayon. That’s how some people colour in the engraved letters on there guns. Just YouTube it.

Another method i have used;

Paint the entire thing red, put it in a drill and sand off the red, it will stay red in the depressions. Polish. done.

You could use crayon to fill in the marks. its what some people to with trade marks on guns

Start over.
Re-paint the knob whatever color you want the numbers/gear pattern.
Let it dry.
Fill in the numbers/gear pattern with puddy.
Paint the knob whatever color you want.
Let the paint dry.
Use a Q-Tip to remove the puddy.
I used this method on my valve cover and it turned out great!
