The Volvo 940
After reading a review of the Saab 9-3, i decided to write a review of the other Swedish car. Volvo, more specifically, Volvo 940. Some say it´s the last of it´s kind, the last “real” Volvo. The RWD and the boxy shape reminds of Volvo´s way back to the early seventies.
This “Volvo shape” is the Scandinavian shape. The Volvo 240 had great success in the Scandinavian countries, it´s reliability and the fact that you could fit you whole family and all your belongings in it made it a car for the people.
Enough about shapes and families. the question is, why did i choose a Volvo 940? I needed a new car after my Mazda 323 broke down, but I am a 21 year old student, I do not need the integrated child seat in my 940. Why did I not choose a cheap Toyota Corolla instead? (Not a bad word about Toyota Corolla)
I was on the lookout for a car for quite som time. I could not decide if I should be economic and please my wallet, or buy a car I really wanted, something fun, a car that spoke to me. A lot of the Asian car brands makes good cars, and there are many affordable classics on the market. I actually wanted to buy a Corolla or a Camry, but i had a revelation.
I started looking for a Volvo 240, but most of them are now in possession of a kid my age, and has been a victim of merciless driving. All the 240, 740 and 940 i went to see was extremely wore down. Then one day my uncle told me he knew a man selling his Volvo 940, and me and my uncle went to see it.
There it was, the car i had been looking for all this time. Sure, it had major milage (370 000 km/ 230 000 miles) but you could tell the car had been looked after. The iconic design, the 2.3 liter engine and the rear wheel drive sealed the deal.
Now, after a year of ownership i could not have been happier. This was truly the car for me. The repairs have been mostly on regular wear and tear, and some other minor problems like the fuel filter and
the water pump. But that is expected after 20 years of service.
This is the car that really sparked my enthusiasm for cars. the fact that i could do my own repairs with relative ease and that it´s fun to drive around (especially in the winter) made it the perfect choice for me.
Specifications for the car
1996 mod Volvo 940
2.3l Turbo 99kw/135hp

This is pretty much exactly how I ended up with mine! Was looking for something Japanese, sat with my uncle and my dad, and decided to check out some 240’s. Then my uncle told me about the 940 I ended up buying!
