Toyota MR2 as a first car?

I’ve been hitting up the classifieds for my first car, and found a mint condition W20 1993. MR2. I am really really tempted to buy it, im sure its in mint condition, but what im worried about is the fact that its a 2 seater and lack space, is it awesome enough to overcome it? Any info, especially from owners is greatly appreciated! Cheers

my first car is an ‘91 MR2.
They can be really tricky to drive. But on the road. How often will you drive it on its limits?

The lack of space can be a problem, but i never had problems with it.

Okay so I have owned my Mr2 soon for a year and here’s my point of view!

Regarding the luggage space, you’d be amazed how much you can fit in that compartment behind the engine XD I’ve fitted 2 stationary computers, 2 screens, 2 bags full of everything else to set up those computers! And if you think about it that’s pretty much!

Snap oversteer: I’m a very decent driver, but I’ve only had my license for a little over 2 years now! I thrash my mr2 both on roads and tracks and have never encountered the snap oversteer to the extent that I can’t handle it!
And for everyone that wonders:
I got a Gen 2 1991 Mr2 Rev1, H&R racing coils, lowered to track usage, the rest is just pure driving skill from my side!

I will be taking mine on a pretty big roadtrip this summer and you can follow me on my YouTube that you can find in my Carthrottle profile :)

Yeah, im actually surprised because i didn’t find out about the compartment until an hour ago lol.
I’d say my worries about the space are gone :)
Thanks for the input!

Well, you’re still young so don’t stress about practicality, you don’t have a family yet. Just make sure that your car is reliable and easy to source parts for.

As for snap oversteer, get used to it on a track. It may be scary for a beginner but you can get used to any car, don’t let something like that limit your options ;)

Well it has a 3SGE Celica engine in it, so the parts won’t be a big problem, and since it was fully rebuilt id say the reliability issue is also taken care of.
And holy cows your AE86 is sweet!

I just sold mine. There’s plenty of storage but can’t help but think it’s not a good first car. The rumours are correct. It is very dangerous. The snap happens fast. It feels like it comes from nowhere and there’s literally nothing you can do to stop it once it starts. You end up backwards 45 degrees from the corner. Not good on the road. Fun on the track!

I say it depends on where you live. If the weather is nice all year round it won’t be bad at al to have. But if you have to deal with snow for a nice portion of the year, I’d say look elsewhere unless you’re willing to park it for the snowy months. Snow is the reason I had to turn down the deal and a half my friend was going to give me on a low mileage imported Turbo MR2.

Well we get snow maybe once in every 5 years so that won’t be a problem, and rain is not too common so i don’t think that will be a problem.
Its not even march and people here are walking in T-Shirts so id say were a pretty warm region.

I have had an mR2 as my first car at 17. All i can say is, if You don’t drive it like an idiot, You will be fine. Take it easy, get to know the handling of the car and You will enjoy the heck out of it :) . Just be careful with snap oversteer- You have to be smooth in the corners ;)
